Track day brake pads: what to run, and when to swap

Nothing exposes a brake pad like a circuit. A pad that feels heroic on the street can be gone in three laps, literally gassing off its binders while your pedal sinks. Here's how to think about pads for track use, from first HPDE to race weekends.

Why street pads die on track

A hard lap puts more energy through your brakes in two minutes than a week of commuting. Rotor temperatures pass 500 °C; pad surface temperatures spike higher. Street compounds are resin-bound for quiet cold operation. Past their ceiling, the resin outgasses (classic "green fade"), friction collapses, and the pad glazes. Once glazed, it never feels right again.

Every pad on our grid lists its operating window for exactly this reason. For track work, the ceiling is the spec that matters: sustained sessions want 650 °C minimum, and heavy or fast cars want 750+.

Your three real options

1. Dual-duty compounds: drive there, lap, drive home

Pads like the Ferodo DS2500, EBC Bluestuff NDX and Endless MX72 work from cold and survive 650–750 °C. This is the right call for your first seasons: one set, zero logistics, full safety margin on the drive home. The tax is street manners (more noise and dust than any comfort pad), and they'll still fade before a real race compound.

2. The two-set strategy: the enthusiast standard

Once you're quick, run a civil street set Monday–Friday and a dedicated track compound at the circuit. Swapping pads takes 30–45 minutes per axle with basic tools. You get genuinely better braking on both sides of the split: silence on the commute, and a Carbotech XP8 or G-LOC R10 that laughs at heat on track.

Swap-day checklist: torque wrench, caliper tool or C-clamp, wire brush, high-temp lubricant for pins, and a bedding plan for the track set (two medium laps before you lean on them). Bring the street set home in a labeled box; pads wear to their rotor.

3. Full race compounds: for caged cars

Pads like the Hawk DTC-60, Pagid RSL29 and PFC 08 barely work below 150 °C. On a trailer-queen race build they're mandatory; on anything driven on public roads they're a liability. If your car wears plates, stop at option 2.

What matters more than pads

  • Brake fluid. A long pedal on track is as often boiled fluid as faded pads. Run a high-temp DOT 4 (dry boiling point 310 °C+) and bleed before every event.
  • Rotors. Heat-checked or below-minimum rotors crack under track loads. Inspect before and after.
  • Tires. Your braking distance is tire-limited long before it's pad-limited. A grippier tire lets you use the pad you paid for.
  • Cooling-down lap. Parking with 500 °C rotors clamped by hot pads imprints pad material: the "warped rotor" that's actually uneven deposit. Always take a cool-down lap and avoid the handbrake in the paddock.
