How to bed in brake pads: the ten minutes that decide everything
Bed-in (or "burnishing") transfers a microscopic, even film of pad material onto the rotor face. Done right, you get full bite, quiet operation and no vibration. Skipped, you get uneven deposits, the shudder everyone misdiagnoses as "warped rotors".
Why it works
New pads brake by abrasion (scraping) until a transfer film forms; after that, most friction is adherent: pad material gripping pad material at the molecular level. The film only deposits evenly if the rotor is heated progressively and kept turning while hot. Stop dead on hot brakes and you print a pad-shaped patch of extra material: a bump your pedal will find forever after.
The procedure (street pads)
Find a quiet road. You need about 10 minutes and space to brake repeatedly without traffic.
- Warm up. Five minutes of normal driving, light braking only.
- Moderate stops ×5. From ~60 km/h down to ~20 km/h, medium pedal pressure. Roll 30 seconds between stops to let heat spread.
- Firm slowdowns ×5. From ~90 km/h down to ~20 km/h, hard steady pressure, short of ABS and never to a complete standstill.
- Cool down. Ten minutes of driving with minimal braking. Park without standing on the pedal; skip the handbrake if it clamps the rear rotors.
You'll likely smell the resin curing on the firm stops; that's normal. A little smoke from the wheels on aggressive compounds is normal too. Friction feeling stronger with each stop is the film forming; that's the whole point.
Performance and track compounds
Aggressive compounds (Hawk HP+, Ferodo DS2500, any track pad) want a hotter cycle: two rounds of the firm-slowdown sequence with a full cool-down between, or the manufacturer's specific procedure — Hawk, Ferodo, Carbotech and G-LOC all publish one, and the maker's instructions always win over any generic guide, including this one. Track pads are best bedded at the track during an easy warm-up session.
The classic mistakes
- Coming to a dead stop mid-procedure. The #1 source of deposits. Keep rolling.
- New pads on old scored rotors. The pad only touches the ridges — partial contact, glazing, noise. Resurface or replace rotors that are scored or below minimum thickness.
- One giant panic stop as "bed-in". Shock-heats the surface, glazes the pad. Progressive heat is the mechanism.
- Immediate highway-exit hard braking on day one. Give the film its ten gentle minutes first; full performance arrives after 200–300 km of normal driving.
- Ignoring mixed compounds. Swapping pad brands without cleaning the rotor face (or fresh rotors) means two incompatible films fighting: judder. When changing compound family, refresh the rotor surface.
What glazing feels like
A glazed pad is shiny, smells acrid, and feels like braking on wet soap: pedal pressure without deceleration, often with a high hiss. Light glazing can sometimes be worn off with a careful re-bed; heavy glazing means the resin has vitrified and the pads are done. Prevention costs ten minutes; the cure costs a set of pads.
Safety notes
- Do this on an empty road, in the dry, with nobody behind you.
- Everything here is below ABS threshold; you're heating brakes, not testing stability control.
- Brakes will be hot when you finish: no parking on dry grass, no touching wheels.
